Top end litigator wins best graduating student in Commercial Litigation

Published on 24 March 2022

Anne Chin has carved a career in Darwin, as a government lawyer and litigator, and as an active volunteer for the Top End Women’s Legal Service and Darwin Community Legal Service. After exploring several areas of law, she settled in litigation. Anne recently completed a College of Law LLM (Applied Law) majoring in Commercial Litigation, and was named Commercial Litigation’s best graduating student. We caught up with Anne about her career to date, how her studies helped her progress as a litigator, and her advice for lawyers looking to move into litigation.

What was your first job in law? Where do you work now, and what is the most rewarding aspect of your role?

My first job in law was as a vacation clerk within Solicitor for the Northern Territory (SFNT), which is part of the Northern Territory Department of the Attorney-General and Justice (AGD). Shortly after graduating from university, I commenced employment with AGD which provided exposure to various areas of law. As I was eager to enhance my advocacy skills, I joined the litigation division within SFNT in or around September 2019, where I strove to improve the legal services I provided to my clients. I recently joined Minter Ellison, and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Outside of work, I also volunteer as a legal advisor at Top End Women's Legal Service and Darwin Community Legal Service. It has been rewarding to be able to assist clients in the justice system, particularly those that are disadvantaged.

What was your favourite part of study? Do you have a lecturer you want to shout out?

I enjoyed the challenge of addressing legal issues arising from realistic hypothetical scenarios. What also made the course so enjoyable were the supportive lecturers. In particular, I was fortunate to have Lachlan Menzies for a few subjects, and was grateful for his critical feedback and engagement with us as students.

How have your studies helped with what you do at work? Has it helped progress your career? Do you have any examples?

There’s no doubt that my studies have assisted my work. On several occasions, I have referred back to my study notes in relation to aspects of law; they’ve served well as a quick reference guide. My studies have also enhanced my research skills and writing skills.

What advice would you have for lawyers looking to move into Commercial Litigation?

My advice for lawyers looking to move into Commercial Litigation is that it is important to choose the right employer. A supportive team and good mentorship really helps in advancing your career.
