Angie Zandstra

Angie Zandstra

Group Chief Commercial Officer

Angie is a former lawyer and has many years’ experience in legal and professional services, education and training, both in Australia and Asia, having lived in Singapore and worked across the region. Angie’s role is focused on growing the College of Law Asia and its international reach. Angie holds an LLB (Hons), LLM, and a MBA from Melbourne Business School.

James Jung

Director of International Relations & Development

James was previously the Director of Programs for the College of Law Asia since its inception and has overseen the development of curriculum and programs in the Asia-Pacific region. James now leads the international development and strategy division at the College. James has many years of experience as a financial services lawyer working for mid-tier and large firms in private practice as well as working for the Government – the New Zealand Financial Markets Authority as a financial services regulatory lawyer. James holds a BA/LLB, MA (Hons), and LLM (Hons) from the University of Auckland.

Raphael Tay

Teaching Fellow and Principal Adviser (Asia)

Raphael is a Partner and Head of Corporate Law at LAW Partnerships, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is also a Teaching Fellow and Principal Adviser (Asia) at the College of Law. Raphael’s deep experience in cross-border work throughout the region ensures that our international programs are always focused on real world learning that can be applied immediately back to practice. Raphael has been an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya since 1986, a Notary Public since 2007 and a Registered Trademark Agent since 1998. Raphael completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the UK.

Matthew Baird

Matthew Baird

Matthew Baird is an Australian environmental lawyer specialising in environmental and planning law, including heritage protection and environmental criminal law, with over 25 years involvement in environmental law. He has been involved in successful challenges to major projects based on climate change grounds. He has an extensive background in public participation and the due process rules relating to the assessment of major projects and critical infrastructure projects. From 2010–2014, his expertise in climate change litigation has been recognised as the only barrister in Best Lawyers Australia – Climate Change. Matthew is a Teaching Fellow at the College and is the Head of the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Law, Policy and Practice program at the College.

Michael Chu

Michael focuses his practice on all aspects of patent law, including complex litigation, opinions, and prosecution. He serves as the IP Litigation Practice Group Leader in McDermott’s Chicago office. Michael is also the Chair of the Firm’s Racial & Ethnic Diversity Committee. Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering at University of Illinoi and Juris Doctor (JD) from College of William & Mary. Michael is the Past President of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) and the current Vice-President of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA). Michael is a Teaching Fellow at the College and currently teaches the Cross-border Intellectual Property Practice subject.

Karen Gough

Karen Gough practises internationally as counsel, attorney-at-law, arbitrator, adjudicator and ADR neutral. She has specialised, for more than 30 years, in complex construction, engineering, professional negligence and general commercial disputes whether resolved by litigation, arbitration or ADR. She represents a wide range of clients including governments, government agencies, local authorities, educational institutions, contractors, sub-contractors, and major commercial organisations. Karen is the Past President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and currently teaches the International Arbitration Practice subject at the College.Michael focuses his practice on all aspects of patent law, including complex litigation, opinions, and prosecution. Dr Charles Koh

Charles (Chol-Soo) is a Special Adviser of the Finance team at Kim & Chang in Seoul. He has extensive experience in AML/CTF and Personal Data Protection laws and has previously held senior roles with Korean Government departments including the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Finance and Economy of the Republic of Korea. Prior to joining Kim & Chang, Charles was the Deputy Director of the Compliance & Regulatory Division at the Korean Financial Intelligence Unit. Charles is a FATF Mutual Evaluation Assessor with recent experiences participating in the FATF/APG 2016 and FATF/MONEYVAL 2019 evaluations. Charles teaches the AML/CFT and ESG courses at the College.

Professor Donald Lewis

Professor Lewis previously served as a Visiting Associate Professor of Law, Lecturer in Law, and Research Fellow at Stanford Law School where he taught courses on Chinese trade and investment law and Chinese dispute resolution. Prior to Stanford, he was an Associate Professor of Law at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Law in Hong Kong, China, for 23 years. Professor Lewis has served as a U.S. Fulbright Law Professor in China at the law schools of Nankai University (Tianjin) and Zhongshan University (Guangzhou), and has also taught or lectured at Peking University and Tsinghua University law schools (Beijing). Professor Lewis currently teaches the International Arbitration Practice subject at the College.

James has over 15 years of experience working as lawyer and arbitrator in Hong Kong and New Zealand. James is currently a Senior Associate at Hesketh Henry, a commercial law firm in Auckland. He has previously worked at the offices of Mayer Brown. Pinsent Masons and Baker Potts in Hong Kong. James specialies in international arbitration and construction law, and teaches the International Arbitration Practice subject at the College.

Martin Polaine

Martin is a practising barrister at Brooke Chambers with over 35 years’ experience. Martin is also an experienced international arbitrator, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and a Fellow of the Asian Institute of Alternative Dispute Resolution (FAIADR). Martin teaches law (and writes courses) at postgraduate level for the College where he lectures in ‘International Arbitration’, ‘International Trade & Investment’, ‘Banking & Finance’, ‘Capital Markets’ and ‘Intellectual Property’. As both a practitioner and educator, he has a keen interest in the Asia-Pacific region.

Arvinder is a practising barrister at Brooke Chambers with over 35 years’ experience. She has formerly served as a Senior Crown Prosecutor with the Crown Prosecution Service of England & Wales, Legal Adviser at the Permanent Joint Headquarters (PJHQ), Ministry of Defence and (between 2005 and 2008 as Head of the Criminal Law Section at the Commonwealth Secretariat. Arvinder is a Teaching Fellow at the College and teaches subjects in Cross-border Contracts and Trade & Investment.

Dominic is an experienced leader, lawyer and accountant. After working as Senior Tax Manager in Deloitte’s financial services’ corporate tax services division, he spent 15 years as CFO and then CCO of Stafford Capital Partners, an international multi-asset class private equity firm. He then founded Thaddeus Martin Compliance to support private equity and venture capital managers in integrating compliance, risk management, and sustainability into their organisations. A Legal Practitioner of the Supreme Court of NSW, he attended the University of Technology, Sydney and holds Bachelor’s degrees in Business and in Laws & Legal Practice. Dominic currently teaches courses in ESG Law, Policy and Practice at the College.

Helen Tung

Helen Tung currently practices as a Barrister, Arbitrator and mediator.  She is educated at the University of Sheffield, University of Tilburg (Erasmus Program) and University of Law in which she obtained her law degrees. Helen furthered her studies at the University of Greenwich for PhD studies in maritime security and international law and undertook Directed Studies on International Private Law at The Hague Academy. Prior to joining the Bar she worked in both US and UK firms in London, before developing a commercial law practice with secondments in Korea, China and Japan.  Helen has over 15 years of commercial law experience and her practice has included  reinsurance, maritime law, intellectual property, employment and general commercial disputes where she advised clients in London, UAE and globally.  She is a registered advocate with the ADGM, DIFC, Bar of England and Wales and is a Foreign Registered Lawyer of Victoria, Australia.  Helen is a Teaching Fellow at the College and specialises in teaching International Arbitration and ESG courses.
