This on-demand video addresses a fundamental and tricky aspect of practicing in property law – clearing land titles of unused (or abandoned) easements and old (obsolete) covenants to obtain an unencumbered land title.

  • Contesting an abandoned easement application – written objection or caveat/court?
  • Covenants that are deemed obsolete by the Real Property Act
  • Covenants that cannot practically operate

Presenter biography

 Greg Stilianou Principal, Greg Stilianou Legal


Greg Stilianou was a senior lawyer for the Registrar-General at Land and Property Information for over ten years. Greg continued as a senior lawyer with NSW Land Registry Services when it took over the land titling and registry functions of the Registrar-General. Greg has acquired twelve years of specialist knowledge and experience in land law, and is the author of Land Titling Law and Practice in NSW. Greg strives to give accurate and technical legal advice that is practical and useful for legal practitioners.

There isn’t a land dealing or plan that Greg hasn’t encountered, and since 2019, Greg has established his own practice, Greg Stilianou Legal, where he focusses on delivering his insights into the requirements for achieving registration in the land Register to private clients and, on a consultancy basis, to other legal practitioners, conveyancers and surveyors. Greg facilitates transactions by providing:

  • Special counsel on land titling due diligence.
  • Strategic advice about the documents that are necessary to give effect to a land transaction or a particular objective in the land Register.
  • Quality legal drafting of land transaction documentation.
  • Legal and practical insights on documents that are proposed to be lodged for registration.
  • Special insights into the development of land.

Greg has been the contributing author of this LTOP service since April 2016, and he continues his passion for educating and teaching the legal profession as a lecturer at The College of Law (practical legal training and the applied law programs).

Claiming CPD units

If you intend to claim CPD units for this educational activity, please note that CPD activities are not accredited by the Law Society of NSW or any other equivalent local authority, with the exception of Western Australia. If you hold a practising certificate in a state or territory other than Western Australia and this educational activity extends your knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to your practice needs or professional development, then you should claim one (1) "unit” for each hour of attendance, refreshment breaks not included. The annual requirement is ten (10) CPD units each year from 1 April to 31 March. Some practitioners, such as accredited specialists are required to complete more than ten (10) units each CPD year.
