Introducing the Centre for Legal Innovation at the College of Law

Created by The College of Law in 2016, to act as an innovation-focused think tank, the Centre for Legal Innovation (CLI) provides a platform through leadership, practical research and opportunities for collaboration in the legal profession. Its focus is to support legal professionals as they navigate the disruption and new technologies transforming the industry.

Stay informed about innovation in legal practice

The work of the Centre is guided by a global Advisory Board comprised of practising professionals from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, USA and the UK.

The Centre’s work is focussed in three main areas: emerging legal practice, legaltech/AI and legal innovation and legalpreneurship and delivered through its signature initiatives including:

  1. Legalpreneurs Lab - a one-stop-shop learning community on legaltech and innovation with seven special interest groups
  2. Innovation Incubator – the Centre’s inaugural incubator launched in 2020 with 16 projects from around Australia and New Zealand – in 2021, the second incubator program was extended to Asia
  3. The Legalpreneurs Sandbox – a podcast series focussed on conversations with thought leaders about changes in, and the transformation of, the legal ecosystem
  4. Fellowships – the Centre offers Research and Distinguished Fellowships to legal professionals interested in researching topical areas and creating materials (checklists, toolkits, reports, podcasts and videos) that are of practical use and immediate benefit in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of legal practice for the legal ecosystem and the wellbeing of its professionals.

Executive Director of the Centre for Legal Innovation (Australia, New Zealand and Asia)

As the Executive Director of the Centre, Terri works internationally with leaders and managers of law firms, legal departments, community legal centres, alternative legal service/product providers, legal associations, legal incubators and accelerators, legaltech entrepreneurs, law schools, business schools, business professionals and lawyers, supporting their contribution to the transformation of legal practice. She has been a thought leader in people centred legal practice innovation for more than 25 years. Prior to joining the Centre, Terri was a practising lawyer and subsequently led the in-house talent management departments for global firms and associations. She has also led or taught on practical legal education initiatives in law schools in Asia, Australia and the US. In 2010, Terri founded Mottershead Consulting in the US, and later expanded it to Australasia, to focus on supporting lawyers, legal business specialists and law firms in identifying, developing and transforming their capabilities and practices to a new way of delivering legal services/products to the market.
