Presenter biography

Deputy President Bernard McCabe, Division Head of the Taxation & Commercial Division and the Small Business Taxation Division

Deputy President Bernard McCabe is Division Head of the Taxation & Commercial Division and the Small Business Taxation Division. Mr McCabe was appointed as a Deputy President of the Tribunal and as Division Head on 25 March 2016.

Mr McCabe was first appointed as a part-time member of the Tribunal in 2001 a full-time Senior Member in 2003. Mr McCabe was previously an Associate Professor of Law at Bond University. He was also a member of the legal committee of the Companies and Securities Advisory Committee between 1998 and 2001.

 

Deborah Mitchell, Member – General Division, Former District Registrar

Member Deborah Mitchell was appointed to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal as a full time Member on 3 November 2018 and is cross-assigned to all divisions of the Tribunal. Member Mitchell currently sits in the General and Other, Veterans’ Appeals, Tax and Commercial and Small Business Taxation Divisions. Prior to her appointment as a Member of the AAT, Ms Mitchell spent three years as the District Registrar of the Brisbane Registry of the AAT.

Ms Mitchell is a Nationally Accredited Mediator, having conducted a number of conferences and conciliations in her roles at the AAT.

Ms Mitchell graduated from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce and was admitted to the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory in 2004. She has completed a Masters of Law at the Australian National University.

 

Dr Bridget Cullen, Member - Migration & Refugee Division

Member Bridget Cullen was appointed to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal on 1 July 2017, and is cross-assigned to the Migration and Refugee, General, and Veterans’ Appeals Divisions. Dr Cullen predominantly sits in the Migration and Refugee Division, and is the Chair of the Migration and Refugee Division’s Practice Directions Working Group. Prior to her appointment to AAT, Dr Cullen spent 7 ½ years as a Legal Member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Dr Cullen is a Nationally Accredited Mediator, and a registered Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. She has law degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and was admitted as a Barrister in Queensland in 2000. Dr Cullen is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Griffith Law School, where she teaches evidence law.
