Current research reveals that the attraction, retention, and motivation of talent remain among the top challenges in the Australian Legal Industry, with over 25% of lawyers considering a move within the next year. The increasing public concerns about treatment within firms, exposure of ‘toxic’ cultures, and research into psychosocial harm signal that firms are navigating troubled waters.
Partners and lawyers often lack training in effective leadership and people management, with 'soft skills' conflicting with high-performance traits valued by firms. The growing divide between Baby Boomer partners and Millennial and Gen Z lawyers further complicates these issues. However, change is necessary and possible. This discussion will address these challenges, sharing insights and opportunities for lasting, constructive change.

He established a leading professional women's networking group and innovative arts partnerships. Subsequently, he served as Chief Executive of the peak chamber of commerce for seven years. Nigel is a Fellow and Graduate of AICD and has facilitated leadership, strategy, risk, and organisational culture workshops across various sectors for boards, CEOs, senior management teams, and lawyer groups.
