Negotiation is a skill every lawyer must practice with confidence.
Achieve better results for your clients and sharpen your negotiation skills with well-known dispute resolution author and mediator Laurence Boulle. This Workshop will look at different forms of negotiation, their strengths and shortcomings, and their different applications. Focus will be on ‘hard bargaining’ over money and the types of ‘soft skills’ which can be useful for lawyers in the context of these particular negotiations. Topics include:
- Essential skills, techniques and knowledge negotiate confidently and effectively
- Hard bargaining over money and the challenges in hard bargaining
- Conditional linked bargaining
- Interests and positions in negotiation
- Biases in human decision making
- Soft skills in hard bargaining
- Lawyer – client negotiations
PROFESSOR LAURENCE BOULLE
Author, Mediator, Professor of Law
Laurence Boulle learned to negotiate from four children and has mediated from Parramatta to Cairns, and many places in between. He was in legal practice before becoming an academic and since 1991 has been mediating and managing conflicts in community, family, personal injury, native title, organisational and commercial disputes. He has trained thousands of lawyers and others, in negotiation, conflict management and dispute resolution, most recently in Belfast for the Commonwealth Law Association, in Fiji for the Australian Disputes Centre, in Hong Kong for the HK Mediation Association, in Auckland for the NZ Law Society, in Wellington for the Institute of Judicial Studies, and for Fair Work Australia and Bond University.
