What the subject is about

Criminal practice requires highly developed skills of analysis and judgment. Whether prosecuting or defending in a criminal matter, an individual's liberty may be at stake and this may place significant pressure on the lawyer.

The subject covers:

in criminal practice which will enable you to act competently for clients in this area.

Unit 2 will be conducted in an onsite workshop. Before you attend the workshop complete Unit 1 and the reading for the workshop set out in Unit 2. 

Subject aim

The aim is to assist you to become competent in the following elements of criminal practice:

  1. Providing advice

  2. Applying for bail.

  3. Making pleas.

  4. Representing a client in minor matters.

  5. Preparing cases for trial.

At the end of this subject you will be able to demonstrate competence in each element of criminal practice.

Unit 2   Criminal Practice Workshop

The workshop comprises the following modules:

  1. Appearing for a client in Bail Applications

  2. Pleamaking and Sentencing Options

  3. Appearing for a client in a plea of guilty
