Your Key Accountabilities

  • Provide quality and timely legal advice and services to the Director, Legal Services, and the Team Leader in relation to issues pertaining to native title and related legislation.
  • Provide assistance in preparation for matters in the National Native Title Tribunal and appear as required in that Tribunal .
  • Prepare instructions to the Crown Solicitor on matters assigned by the Team Leader involving “tied work”, by providing clear and concise details of the issues, the legal and policy implications and the relevant law involved;
  • Prepare instructions to external providers of legal services on complex matters that clearly define the terms of reference.
  • Consult and negotiate with stakeholders and the community on sensitive legal and policy issues and reforms.
  • Exercise initiative and respond quickly and effectively to non-routine, urgent matters requiring legal advice.
  • Draft Indigenous Land Use Agreements and Right to Negotiate Agreements and provide advice in relation to negotiation and compensation agreements dealing with native title and cultural heritage issues under the Commonwealth and State regimes.

You will be assessed on the basis of the following:

  • Ability to undertake high level analytical and legal research;
  • Ability to preparation of quality legal and policy advice, submissions and correspondence in complex legal matters;
  • Ability to draft complex Statutory Agreements and Deeds;
  • Prepare matters for courts/tribunals and appear in such jurisdictions;
  • Highly developed written, verbal and interpersonal, consultation and negotiation skills;

Your Qualifications

  • Possession of a Degree in Law; and
  • Admission or eligibility for immediate admission to practise as a solicitor or barrister in Queensland and the High Court of Australia.

The vision of the Department of Natural Resources and Water (NRW) is for 'enhanced community benefit through sustainable natural resource management'.

NRW plays a critical role in stewardship of Queensland 's natural resources.  The department manages and allocates the state's land and water, and manages native vegetation.

The Tribunal seeks applications from interested persons for a non-ongoing vacancy in its Sydney Office.
