Professional Program

Admission in NSW

To qualify for admission as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, it is necessary to complete:

  • a recognised degree in law, or a Diploma in Law from the NSW Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB),
  • an approved undergraduate course in Legal Ethics, and
  • an approved program of practical legal training.

NSW Academic requirements

If you have an academic legal qualification from an institution outside New South Wales, and you intend to seek admission as a legal practitioner in NSW on completion of your practical training, we recommend that you contact the LPAB to ensure that your qualifications are sufficient for NSW admission purposes.

Note: The LPAB requires your degree to include a subject in Legal Ethics. You should also contact the LPAB even if you are a law graduate of a NSW institution and are not sure that your degree includes a subject in Legal Ethics. The College offers a Legal Ethics Bridging Course for graduates who have not completed this requirement in their degree. NSW Court admission applications

Please contact the LPAB on the details below to:

  • make your application to the Supreme Court of NSW for admission as a legal practitioner
  • confirm application lodgement dates
  • confirm admission requirements

The College does not check that your tertiary qualification in law will meet the LPAB's admission requirements, nor does it check issues relating to character, which are required by the LPAB. The College does not warrant that by enrolling (except in relation to the Professional Program when duly completed) you will be entitled to be admitted as a legal practitioner. You should confirm these matters yourself with the LPAB.
