Western Australian Stream

The College of Law offers the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice to law graduates as a path to admission as an Australian Lawyer.

On 4 March 2009, the Legal Practice Board of Western Australia approved The College of Law Western Australian course. This approval enables the Western Australian Stream to offer direct admission in WA.

The first Western Australian Stream intake will commence on 16 March 2009.

Western Australian Stream

The Western Australian Stream incorporates three components:

  • Coursework Component - either full time over 15 weeks or part-time over 30 weeks
  • Work Experience Component - a total of 75 days of legal work experience which must be undertaken in Western Australia
  • Continuing Legal Education Component - 10 hours of online seminars

Note: Law students may be able to count up to 40 days of legal work experience undertaken as an undergraduate towards their Work Experience Component requirement..

Work Experience Requirements

Please note, that in Western Australia, it is currently a requirement that work experience meet the following conditions:

  • The duration of the workplace experience component must equate to 15 weeks full-time employment, and can only be undertaken on a part-time basis if that employment is for a minimum of 2 days per week.
  • The employment must comply with the requirements of the Minimum Conditions of Employment Act 1993.
  • The workplace experience must be undertaken in Western Australia .
  • The workplace experience must be undertaken under the direct supervision of a legal practitioner who holds an unrestricted Western Australian practising certificate, or as a Judge's Associate
  • The duties undertaken by the student during the workplace experience must equate to duties normally undertaken by a law clerk or paralegal.
  • During the workplace experience the student must have some client contact.
  • Students must maintain a record of the hours worked and duties undertaken during their workplace experience.
  • The workplace experience must have commenced within two years' of the start date of the PLT course and/or concluded within two years' of the end date of the PLT course. The PLT course may only be completed concurrently with full-time employment if the PLT course is undertaken on a part-time basis.

The College has made representations to the Legal Practice concerning these rules which may result in some changes to these rules after 1 July 2009.
