Graduate Diploma of In-house Legal Practice
The In-house Legal Practice Program is a practical problem-based course for in-house practitioners who want to expand their skills and knowledge, or for lawyers in private practice who are looking to move in-house.
The course has been designed by The College of Law in consultation with Australian Corporate Lawyers Association (ACLA) and is delivered online, with occasional face-to-face workshops. The course is accredited in all states and territories.
Upon successful completion, students will receive a Graduate Diploma of In-house Legal Practice. |

Curriculum
The curriculum for the In-house Legal Practice Program emphasises the practical realities of legal practice within either a corporate or government legal department. You will complete four core subjects and two elective subjects.
The subject IHP101 Advising in-house is a foundation subject and a prerequisite for the other core subjects. It is offered every semester and must be completed in the first semester in which you are enrolled.

COURSE FEES AND PAYMENT DETAILS
Course Fees
The tuition fee for each subject is $1500. You must pay your fees for all enrolled subjects at the time of enrolment.
Note: If you withdraw from a subject, the College can only re-credit your fees towards a later semester in the most exceptional circumstances. Please check the Course Manual for information on fees.
FEE-HELP
For eligible students, the tuition fee may be fully or partially covered by FEE-HELP, in which case a Request for FEE-HELP Assistance Form must be submitted with your Application Form. If you are not an Australian citizen or have a permanent humanitarian visa, you will be required to pay the tuition fee upfront.
If you have applied for FEE-HELP assistance, you may withdraw from the program on, or prior to, the Census Date without incurring a Commonwealth debt. After the Census Date, you become liable to repay the tuition fee via the tax system once you attain the relevant income level. The College may apply a charge for FEE-HELP students who withdraw on or before, or who transfer before or after, the Census Date.
If you wish to access a FEE-HELP loan you must include a Request for FEE-HELP Assistance Form with this application form. If you wish to only apply for one semester at a time, you will need to make a separate FEE-HELP application when enrolling for each semester.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How long will it take to do the course?
This depends on the number of subjects that you choose to complete each semester. The College offers subjects over two semesters each year, starting in February and August. You may complete the course full-time in one year by enrolling in three subjects in each semester, or part-time over several semesters.
What are the attendance requirements?
Most of the course is delivered online. Some subjects require attendance at a half or full day workshop or participation in face to face assessments. The workshops are subject to student locations and numbers. For students who are unable to attend alternative real-time methods such as web conferencing may be used.
How will I learn?
Online delivery enables you to undertake the course at times and locations that fit with your work and other commitments. This delivery method is ideally suited to adult professionals with an emphasis on learning at your own pace, and enables you to take responsibility for your own learning.
At all times you will be supported by your lecturers. You can contact your lecturers by email or telephone. The work you submit in the course will be highly practical, and work-related. Your work is generally submitted online to your lecturer who will provide you with personalised feedback.

Will I receive printed course materials?
All the materials you need to complete the course will be provided online. This enables us to provide you with a range of the most up to date and relevant materials. You will be able to select the material that is most useful to you. You may wish to print any materials you would prefer to read or keep in hard copy.
What is the workload?
Your workload will vary depending on your personal study style, previous experience, and available time. For each subject you may expect to spend 4-5 hours each week on reading online material, interacting with your lecturer and other students via discussion groups, working on practical activities provided online. Reading and research may involve additional time. The face to face workshops will generally be 6-7 hours for a full day or 4 hours for a half day workshop.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment events in each subject are spread through the semester. You will be required to complete a number of activities which may include practical written tasks, take home examinations, or a face to face performance based assessments.
Can I enrol in just one subject?
Yes, single subjects are available on a non-award basis. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
How much will it cost?

STUDENT FEEDBACK
So far I have found the course very practical and interesting and I already feel better equipped to deal with many of the issues that would confront in-house counsel. The technical help has been excellent as is access to lecturers.
The issues discussed are close to home and hopefully working through this course will arm me with a variety of skills and further understanding with the aim of effectively tackling them.
