The College of Law Practice Papers are practical guides to key areas of legal practice in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. They are the core resource provided to students in our practical legal training programs in those states, and are also valuable as guides for practitioners new to areas of practice.  Members of the College’s Alumni Association are able to purchase hard-copy sets at a special ‘members-only’ price.

First introduced in New South Wales over 35 years ago, the papers are written and maintained by the College’s academic staff and other expert legal practitioners from each jurisdiction.

The professional responsibility papers deal with the ethical standards, legislation, regulations and the written and unwritten rules, that underpin the practice of law.

A number of other papers cover the skills essential to professional legal practice such as interviewing, advocacy, negotiation, drafting and work management.

The remaining papers are guides for lawyers working in the core practice areas of:

  • civil litigation;
  • commercial and corporate;
  • property;
  • administrative law;
  • criminal law;
  • family law;
  • employment and industrial relations; and
  • wills and estates.

The entire Practice Paper collection for Australia, grouped by state, is published online by LexisNexis Butterworths at and updated regularly throughout the year. A hard copy edition for each state is published annually and comprises several volumes. The Practice Papers are also available as eBooks.
