CASE for Refugees (a community legal centre) are seeking a College of Law student to complete their practical placement. The position is voluntary and therefore unpaid.
CASE has recently launched the Judicial Review Asylum Seeker Project. The aim of this project is to set up a clearinghouse to assist people in detention to obtain legal advice in relation to their claims for asylum and seeking judicial review in the Federal Magistrates Court. The person must be available at least 3 days a week (preferably 4) to work on the project.
The position will be supervised by the Principal Solicitor. Under supervision, you will be required to:
- assist the Principal Solicitor and Project co-ordinator to set up the project
- taking calls from detainees and assisting them to ensure they have all the documents required
- assisting the Solicitor to review decisions for appeal grounds
- liaising with counsel and instructing solicitors to ensure they have all information required
- assisting Principal Solicitors with running any appeal matters which are taken on in house.
- prepare documentation and conduct research
- update clients on their applications and follow-up on client enquiries
- arrange for translators
- negotiate with other parties on behalf of clients.
You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, good cross cultural communication skills and the patience and ability to work with non English speaking clients. You will have the ability to effectively time manage a high and diverse workload and to be an effective team member. You should be a proficient computer user. A passion for community law, access to justice and human rights is essential as is the ability to learn quickly.
