What is this subject about?
Criminal practice requires highly developed skills of analysis and judgment. Whether prosecuting or defending in a criminal matter, an individual's liberty may be at stake and this may place significant pressure on the lawyer.
This subject covers:
- an understanding of the law, rules, practices and procedures, and
- the ability to apply fundamental processes to criminal matters.
What will I learn and what skills will I have the opportunity to practise?
This subject will assist you to become competent in the following elements of criminal practice:
- providing advice
- applying for bail
- making pleas, and
- preparing cases for trial and representing clients.

- assessment of plea in mitigation (60%)
