New South Wales Part PLT Program

The Legal Profession Admission Board (LPAB) now recognises the experience of some overseas practitioners who are seeking admission as a lawyer in NSW and provides for exemptions from parts of the practical legal training requirements which are generally a prerequisite for admission as a lawyer by the NSW Supreme Court. The College of Law offers an Exemptee Program which is customised for those lawyers who have been granted partial exemption by the LPAB in order to satisfy the practical legal requirements for admission in NSW.

The following FAQs are designed to assist students with exemptions from the LPAB to enrol at The College of Law:

How are the subjects for the Exemptee Program taught?

The Exemptee Program is offered as an online course. Your lecturer will be contactable via email or telephone during business hours and you will also have online access to the complete set of the College of Law’s Practice Papers. For certain subjects some attendance is required at scheduled onsite sessions for tuition and/or assessment.  Refer to the Guide to Individual Subject Requirements below.

How do I enrol?

Download the Enrolment Form for Exemptee students from the Download section of this website and fax or post to the Exemptee Program with all sections completed. You must pay your course fees at the time of enrolment. You must also provide us with a letter from the LPAB which details the subjects for which you have received exemption.

How long will it take?

The time you take to complete the program is determined by how many subjects you are required to do. The Exemptee Program is designed to meet your individual needs and maximise flexibility. We have programs commencing throughout the year, and you may enrol and complete the program as quickly as the timetable permits. A Guide to Individual Subject Requirements is located at the end of this document.

Many students are only required to complete Trust and Office Accounting and Professional Responsibility, and usually these courses may be completed in six to eight weeks. Please refer Exemptee Enrolment form for course and exam dates.

How much will it cost?

You will pay the aggregate fees for the subjects in which you enrol. Fee Help may be available, providing eligibility conditions are met. Please contact the Exemptee Program ph: 1 300 856 111 or Ph: +61 2 9965 7065 or email exemptees@collaw.edu.au for further details.

What do I receive at the end of the course?

You will receive a Certificate of Completion which identifies the individual subjects passed. This document, with the LPAB’s notice of exemption, must be included with your application to the LPAB for admission as a legal practitioner.

You will not qualify for the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice as this is only awarded to  those students  who complete the whole of the College’s PLT Program in order to satisfy the practical legal training requirements for admission.  You do not need a Graduate Diploma to be admitted as a legal practitioner. If you would like to undertake the complete PLT Program and receive the Graduate Diploma, please visit the Future Students sections of this website under practical legal training.

How do I become admitted in New South Wales?

The LPAB is responsible for making rules for, and approving, the admission of legal practitioners. Once you have completed your study and wish to apply for admission, you will need to contact the LPAB.

Please check the table below to find out which course you can complete by your preferred admission date. This is a guide only, based on a student who must undertake Professional Responsibility and Trust Accounting. If you are undertaking more than these two subjects you must ensure that you have adequate time to satisfactorily complete all the coursework before undertaking the assessments.

Do I have to commit to the courses or exam dates I nominate?

No, however there are transfer fees which must be paid by students who transfer courses or change exam dates. Students enrolled in X-stream courses may be charged up to $250 to transfer to another course. Students changing nominated exam dates will be charged an exam transfer penalty of $50. Please be careful when selecting courses or exam dates.
