Advanced Standing

There may be opportunities for advanced standing in the Graduate Diploma or Master of Applied Law Programs, in particular for Accredited Specialists in practice areas relevant to the Program. Students may claim advanced standing for a maximum of two subjects for the Applied Law Programs in Commercial Litigation and Family Law. Whereas, students applying for the In-house Legal Practice Program may claim advanced standing for a maximum of one subject. Please contact the Applied Law Programs Administrator or see the Applied Law Programs Course Manual for further information.

Articulation

Students who enrol in a Masters degree may apply to exit with a lesser award once the course requirements for that lesser award have been completed. Students who enrol in the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma may apply to proceed to a higher award at any time. A student who has already had a lesser award conferred may apply to proceed to a higher award with full credit for the lesser award.

Assessment requirements

Assessment for each subject varies and may include:

  • written advices to clients; assignments; simulation exercises; mock files (40 per cent)
  • written exams or problem solving viva voce exams (60 per cent)

Details of assessment tasks for each subject can be found under the subject outline for each subject. For students enrolling in single non-award subjects, assessment is optional, but, if you later choose to proceed to an award qualification, it will be mandatory.

Examination dates and venues

Examinations will be held in the final week of each semester.

Extended subject study time

The College recognises that many of our students are busy practitioners who may encounter problems completing subjects within the normal one-semester timeframe. You have the safety net of being able to apply to transfer your study without academic or financial penalty into next consecutive semester. You will retain online access to the materials, allowing you to continue studying. No application for a further transfer of the same subject will be granted and you may only apply to transfer a maximum of three subjects throughout the course of study.

For students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of In-house Legal Practice, transfer into the next semester may not be possible in cases where a subject is not offered in each semester. In those circumstances, the College will review any request for extended study and offer a solution.

FEE-HELP government loans

For eligible students, the tuition fee may be fully or partially covered by FEE-HELP. For further details, review the Application and Enrolment Information, visit www.goingtouni.gov.au or contact the Applied Law Programs Administrator.

Mandatory CLE

You may be entitled to claim up to 15 units per subject for your CLE/CPD requirements.
